Plan 9 from Outer Space

Saturday Grand Finale - Plan 9 from Outer Space

Our feature film to wrap up this year's festival is the 1959 science fiction / horror film that was written and directed by Edward Wood, Jr.

How is it that sometimes worse is better? We don't really know - - the acting is awful, sets are unstable, evidence of movie direction is non-existent, and the production value is . . . well, valueless. The 'Den of Geek' website names Plan 9 From Outer Space as its top classic so-bad-they're-good B movie classic!

Original title was 'Grave Robbers from Outer Space... Many call Plan 9 the worst film ever made - - author Michael Medved awarded Director Ed Wood a posthumous 'Golden Turkey Award' as the worst director ever for the making of Plan 9; it is considered to be the definitive example of a Z-grade movie. Thanks in part to Tim Burton's 1994 biopic film, Ed Wood, Plan 9 has been re-considered and now has become a movie classic.

Film plot - - extraterrestrial beings are seeking to stop humans from creating a doomsday weapon that would destroy the universe. In the course of doing so, the aliens implement "Plan 9", a scheme to resurrect Earth's dead as zombies to get the planet's attention, causing chaos.

Includes the partial performance of Bella Lugosi. Lugosi died before the shooting for this movie began. Wood inserted two minutes of footage previously shot of the actor for another proposed film into Plan 9 and mis-matched that with a stand-in actor's performance. That stand-in actor is Wood's wife's chiropractor, Tim Mason, who is usually seen holding a cape over most of his face.

You may notice that Lugosi's stand-in is a much younger and healthier person, is markedly taller, and does not resemble Lugosi at all - - he's usually seen holding a cape over most of his face.
